Wesak Day (Vesākha), sometimes informally called “Buddha’s Birthday”, it actually encompasses the birth, enlightenment (Nirvana),
and passing away (Parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha.
卫塞节，其实是把佛陀诞生、成道、涅槃，于同一日纪念。
原来，据记载，佛陀5月的一个月圆之日出生；35年后又在5 月的某月圆之日，于菩提树下悟道；后来他涅槃那天，巧的也是5月的月圆之日。
三者虽非同一天，却全都在5月份，且有月圆之最大共同特点。
于是，后世的佛教徒，便订下在每年5月的第一个月圆日，庆祝卫塞节。
Vesak在印度古代梵文的意思，正就是「月圆」。
